General rules for the study of Bhavas
- Each Bhava has innumerable significations i.e. they denote many points of life. These have to be studied very carefully by considering the relevant Bhavas and the ruling planets (Karakas).
- A Bhava will flourish if its lord and Karaka planet are strong by being placed in their exaltation signs, Moola Trikona signs or own signs.
- If the lord of a Bhava is placed between benefic planets or benefic stars, the Bhava will thrive. Note: This is called Subhakartri yoga for the Lord of the Bhava.
- If the lord of a Bhava is placed in the 6th, 8th and 12th houses, the Bhava will suffer destruction.
- If the lord of a Bhava is placed in the three stars called Vipath, Pratyari and Vadha Tara, (3rd, 5th and the 7th starts counted from the natal star), the Bhava will decline.
- If the lord of the Bhava is hemmed between malefic planets, the significations of the Bhava will suffer. Note: This is called ‘Papakartari yoga’ of the lord of the Bhava.
- If the lord of the Bhava is combust or is in debilitation the Bhava is destroyed.
- If the lord of a Bhava is posited in Kendra or Trikona houses, significations of the Bhava will flourish.
- If the lord of a Bhava is posited within the first six houses from its house, it tends to improve the significations of the Bhava.
- The planet which is moving towards its exaltation point, which has large number of Subha Vargas and Vargottama (remaining in the same rashi, Navamsha, Drekkana, Saptamamsha and Trimshamsha) and which is associated with Benefics tend to promote the Bhava.
- The planet that has large number of Astakavarga Bindus (6, 7 or 8) will promote the significations of its Bhava.
- The planet which is not placed as described above will cause the destruction of the Bhava. (i.e. if it is between malefics, conjoined or aspected by malefics etc.).
- A Bhava flourishes if it is conjoined with or aspected by benefic. Similarly, it will thrive if it is hemmed between benefic planets. But if it is otherwise i.e. if it is conjoined with or aspected by malefics or is hemmed between malefic planets, it will suffer destruction.
Satyacharya says that a wise astrologer should judge the effects of a Bhava by the principles given above and by the Pancha Siddhanta Principles’ which are as follows:
- Graha Sheela (the behavior or nature of the different planets)
- Karakatwa (Significators)
- Nakshatra (stellar positions of the planets)
- Swa Varga (positions of the planets in the rashi, Navamsha, Hora, Drekkana and other Varga charts).
- Shadbala (Planetary Strength)
Note: The Pancha Siddhanta, namely, Brahma, Pulisa, Ramaka etc., refers to Astronomy and should not be confused with the above.
