Simple and easy way to decipher D-9 (Navamsha Chart)

There has been an overwhelming response for my article ‘Timing of Marriage’ and I have been flooded with queries regarding timing of marriage, details of spouse, subsequent marital happiness and progeny.

Instead of directing the query to me, you yourselves can get answers in simple steps by decoding D-9, Navamsha Chart without getting into the hassles of full delineation of all charts. However I must caution you that the information obtained from D-9 has to be further sifted if you desire accurate answers.

Navamsha, as you are aware is the 1/9th portion / Amsha of a sign which is of 30°. Therfore each Navamsha is equal to 3°20′. D-9 chart is most important in predictive Astrology. It is a complementary chart to the natal / birth chart wherein planetary strength is assessed. This chart indicates all about marriage, spouse, partners and skills of the native. In Vedic Astrology, D-9 Chart is said to be essential to consult for accurate predictions.

A planet in same sign in both Rashi and Navamsha chart is said to be ‘Vargottama’ and gives excellent results during its Dasha/Bhukti/ Antara periods and also in Transit. Planets become Vargottama in following cases:
  • Movable signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn) and in first Navamsha (0°- 3°20′)
  • Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius) and in 5th Navamsha (13°20′ – 16°40′)
  • Dual signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces) and in last Navamsha (26°40 -30°)
Timing of Marriage
  • Navamsha Lagna Lord in Kendra – early marriage
  • Navamsha Lagna Lord in Trikona –slight delay but will get married in time.
  • Navamsha Lagna Lord in Dusthana, spoilt by malefics like Saturn, Mars, Sun, Rahu and Ketu – Marriage beyond 30 years.
  • Navamsha Lagna Lord is extremely spoilt – Denial of marriage.
  • Navamsha Lagna Lord in 7th House, 7th Lord in 12th House – marriage in 23rd or 26th years of age.
  • 8th House of Rashi chart is 7th House of Navamsha, Venus in Navamsha Lagna, marriage in 25th or 33rd years of age.
  • If Venus in seventh House or the Seventh Lord or the Lagna Lord of Navamsha is all afflicted then one can say that it amounts to no marriage. It would rather be better if such a person’s does not marry.

Nature of Spouse
  • The native will get beautiful, cultured, intelligent wife and will be prosperous and wealthy in his life if Navamsha Lagna Lord is
    • Exalted, in Moola Trikona or in Own house.
    • In other Vargas posited in Kendra / Trikona
    • Do not have any aspect / association with malefics.
  • If Navamsha Lagna Lord is in Dusthana, debilitatated and has aspects of malefics, the native will get mediocre / bad natured wife.
Married Life
If in Navamsha chart
  • 7th House and 7th Lord are aspected by benefics or Venus is in good House, the married life will be smooth and happy.
  • If 7th Lord is Sun or Mars the husband and wife will be mutually honest and trustworthy.
  • If Sun, Mercury is posited in 7th House, there will be extra marital affairs.
  • If Venus is 7th Lord and is exalted or posited in Lagna or 7th House, the native will have associations with many women.
Progeny
If in Navamsha chart
  • 5th House has benefics, 5th Lord is in associated with benefics, the native will have good progeny
  • 5th Lord of Rashi chart is posited in Kendra /Trikona of Navamsha chart, the native will have good progeny.
  • 5th House and 5th Lord are spoilt by malefics, the native will not have happiness from his children

Kuja Dosha / Manglik

1 Oct

Kuja Dosha / Manglik

I have been asked to clarify many misconceptions about ‘Kuja Dosha’ or ‘Manglik’ in a horoscope. Kuja, Angaraka and Mangala are some of the names for Mars and Mars effect being posited in certain houses of horoscope causes Kuja / Angaraka / Mangala Dosha. All over India, astrologers check this Dosha while matching horoscopes for marriage purposes. Especially in North India, they give lot of importance for ‘Manglik’ and many girls remain unmarried for not getting a suitable match.

Mars is ranked as a malefic and being of Martian nature is associated with aggression and thereby can cause some destruction to the house he is posited in. While this is generally true, it cannot be accepted as bad across the board since Mars can be Yogakaraka for certain Lagnas and therefore  it is unwise to assume that he will do harm to all people.

The Classical texts state the following regarding Kuja Dosha.
  • Mars posited in 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8 & 12 reckoned from Lagna causes Kuja Dosha
  • They also state that these positions be examined reckoned from Moon and Venus.
  • Intensity of Dosha when reckoned from Moon and Venus are equal
  • Intensity of Dosha when reckoned from Lagna is twice that from Moon and Venus.
  • For Males, Mars in 2, 7 & 8 and for Females Mars  in 4, 8 & 12, the Dosha is maximum
  • Dosha for the boy should be greater than the girl.
  • For Cancer and Leo Lagna, Mars is Yogakaraka and hence there is no Kuja Dosha.
  • For Gemini and Virgo Lagna it is 100% Dosha
  • For Taurus and Libra Lagna it is 100% Dosha
  • For Sagittarius and Pisces Lagna it is 50% Dosha
  • For Capricorn and Aquarius Lagna it is 75% Dosha
  • For Aries and Scorpio Lagna it is 25% Dosha
While assessing the strength of Kuja Dosha we have to see the strength of Mars. For this we see the Shadbala strength and specially Sthana Bala which is important. Generally all planets when they are exalted they are powerful and give full effect. When in Mulatrikona give 75% effect, Own House 50% effect, Friendly House 25% effect and in Adhi Mitra house (Natural friend + temporary friend) give 3/8 effect.

Note:  If we count Mars position from Lagna, Moon and also Venus, then the whole world population will have Kuja Dosha and therefore I recommend that we stick to Lagna only.

Cancellations /Exceptions

The following are the circumstances when Kuja Dosha gets cancelled.
  • Mars in a Dusthana and in a Bhava Sandi (Cusp)
  • Mars in Own House, Exaltation house, Friend’s house and associated with benefics (Moon, Jupiter and Mercury) or having their aspect.
  • For Gemini and Virgo Lagna Mars in 2nd house
  • For Aries and Scorpio Lagna Mars in 4th house
  • For Capricorn and Aquarius Lagna Mars in 7th house
  • For Sagittarius and Pisces Lagna, Mars in 8th house
  • For  Taurus and Libra Lagna, Mars in 12th house
  • For Cancer and Leo Lagna, there is no Kuja Dosha.
  • Powerful Jupiter and Venus in Lagna or in 7th house
  • Mars in 7th and associated with / aspected by Moon, Jupiter and Mercury
  • Saturn in 1, 4, 7, 8 and 12 from Lagna
  • People born in Ashwini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Aslesha, Uttar Phalguni, Swati, Anuradha, Purvashadha, Uttarashada, Shravana, Uttarabhadra and Revati do not have Kuja Dosha.

Analysis of Mars positions

Mars in 1st House
Mars is the embodiment of aggression and courage. This is a good position for both male and female. However in the context of marriage, the male may turn too violent and physical if Mars is spoilt by other malefics. For females, in today’s context this is required so that they can face the world boldly. But this quality may not be liked by some traditional families looking for a bride.
Mars in 2nd House
Second house represents ‘Speech’ and Mars in 2nd make one to be caustic and aggressive in their speech. In olden days when we had joint family concept the elders wanted a bride who is soft spoken and pliable to carry on with the family traditions. Therefore they disliked or did not want somebody to question elders thereby terming this as powerful Dosha. People, both male and female with this placement are curt and terse in their speech.
 Mars in 4th House
Fourth house represents family happiness and Mars here may cause some disturbance. Unless Mars is thoroughly spoilt, no serious damage will happen. Day to day disharmony and quarrels are common in every household and too much need not be read into this placement.
 Mars in 5th House
For a female, this is a serious placement and is to be studied deeply.  Fifth house is the house of progeny and child bearing ability of the lady. Association with Saturn may delay issues. Other malefics like Ketu can cause miscarriage / abortions. Serious afflictions may deny progeny. This placement in male chart also gives us a clue about progeny.
 Mars in 7th House
7th house represents marriage and partner. Mars presence here can cause some serious damage to the relationship. Do not blindly predict divorce / separation unless Mars is thoroughly afflicted. The couple may live separately for various other reasons and deep study is required before predicting adverse effect.
 Mars in 8th House
8th house is the house of Longevity and for spouse it is the ‘Mangalya Sthana’ This is a serious placement of Mars and you have to very careful in analyzing the chart considering all other aspects. Do not be hasty in coming to a conclusion. 8th house can also mean late marriage and need not necessarily affect longevity.
 Mars in 12th House
12th house represents bed comforts. Mars in 12th may cause some disharmony in this regard. This is not a placement to be worried about if there are benefic aspects on 12th house.
 Note:
1. Do not always think Mars as a harbinger of unhappiness.
2. Mars represents courage, vitality and acts as impetus / catalyst for many activities. Remember he is the Karaka for Blood. Without raising your BP, you can never excel in any activity.
3. He may boost the activities of the house in which he is posited. For e.g. 12th house; he may boost bed activities.
4. Please study Navamsha chart also before coming to any conclusion. Bad placement in Rashi can get modified by good position in Navamsha.
5. Blanket painting of Mars as ‘Separator of Marriage’ is wrong and please devote more time and effort to study Mars deeply.

Pariharas / Remedies for Kuja Dosha

  • Marry off the boy with Kuja Dosha with a girl with similar Dosha. This gets nullified.
  • The deities who represent Mars are Subramanya, Karthikeya, Kumaraswamy or Skanda. Worshipping these deities every Tuesday will bring relief.
  • When Mars is in 8th house and to protect the Mangalya of the girl, especially in South India, the bride is married to a tree like Plantain tree (in some cases Pipal Tree). After the marriage is solemnized, the tree is chopped off signifying the death of husband thereby Dosha gets nullified. She will be ready for actual marriage.
  • In serious cases, Maha Mrityunjaya Homa / Navagraha Homa / Ayushya Homa may be required at the appropriate time.
  • Legend has that Savitri fought with Lord Yama and got her husband back to life. Therefore people believe that girls should perform Savitri Vrata regularly to protect their husband’s longevity.
  • Some people recommend wearing gems like Red Coral (Moonga). But I feel that by wearing these, you are strengthening Mars and his effect on those houses may increase manifold. As far as possible do not wear any of these.
  • Worshipping the Gods Bhairava or Narasimha alongside Subramanya can help relieve the distress.

Timing of Marriage

Timing of Marriage

I have been asked by many people to write about timing of marriage of an individual using the common tools, namely, Dasha & Bhukti and Transit of planets. This is an outline on this subject and details are available in various classical texts.
CLASSIFICATION OF MARRIAGE
When we receive a horoscope for determination of time of marriage we have to see under what classification the individual falls. In olden days the girls were married at a tender age of 12 – 14 years which was considered normal. But in today’s context we have to rewrite this classification and with my experience I would define these categories as follows:

1. Early Marriage – Before 22 years
2. Normal Marriage – 23 to 26 years
3. Late Marriage – 27 to 30 years
4. Delayed Marriage – 31 to 33 years
5. Denial of Marriage –34 years & beyond

I shall enumerate certain important combinations in the chart which points to above categories. These combinations are only significant ones and students are advised to do their own research by referring to classical texts.

Early Marriage1. Venus in Lagna/ 7th house2. Venus in own house /exalted, 7th Lord in a benefic sign

3. Venus + Mars combination in 7th house

4. Lagna Lord in 7th and 7th Lord in Kendra

5. Lagna Lord + 7th Lord in Lagna

6. Venus in 6th house with either Sun or Mars.

7. Lagna Lord closer to 7th House

Normal Marriage

1. The Lagna / Lagna Lord, 7th House / 7th Lord, Venus & Moon should be clear of malefic influence.

2. Venus & 7th Lord occupy good Navamsha sign.

Late Marriage

1. Saturn in Lagna / 7th House.

2. Saturn aspect on Lagna / 7th House /Lagna Lord / 7th Lord

3. Saturn influence on Venus/Rahu/Moon

4. Venus occupying Mars /Saturn Navamsha.

Delayed Marriage

1. Saturn + Mars in Lagna / 7th House or their influence on Lagna Lord / 7th Lord and Lagna & 7th House.

2. Venus and Moon afflicted by Saturn and Mars

3. 7th House / 7th Lord afflicted with malefics without any benefic aspect.

4. Venus in Papakartari Yoga

5. Venus in 8th House

Denial of Marriage

1. Venus in 8th House with Mercury / Saturn

2. Venus debilitated both in Rashi & Navamsha.

3. Lagna /7th House and their Lords in fixed signs & Moon in moveable sign.

4. Venus combust, debilitated and in Papakartari Yoga

5. Malefics in Lagna, 7th &12th House with waning Moon in 5th House.

6. Affliction of 2nd / 7th House and planets posited in fixed signs.

7. Lagna Lord, 7th Lord and Venus posited in Saturn Navamsha.

8. Natural Karakas for marriage, namely, Venus, Moon & Rahu are all highly afflicted.

9. If Venus in seventh House or the Seventh Lord or the Lagna Lord of Navamsha is all afflicted then one can say that it amounts to no marriage. It would rather be better if such a person’s does not marry.

Note: The combinations enumerated above are pri·ma fa·cie indicators and should not be taken as conclusive. We have to take into consideration other factors, such as, Shadbala, Avasthas, Yogas operating at that time and dispositors of karaka planets. For example, a debilitated Saturn may push the category up from delayed to late marriage and an exalted Saturn may bring down the category from late to delayed marriage.

Timing of Marriage using Navamsha Chart
TIMING OF MARRIAGE
Dasha & BhuktiThe individual (during marriageable age) may get married during following conditions.
  • Dasha of 7th Lord, planets occupying 7th house, planets aspecting 7th house
  • Dasha of dispositor of 7th Lord, Lord of Navamsha occupied by 7th Lord
  • Dasha of natural karakas, namely, Venus, Rahu & Moon
  • Dasha of Lagna Lord and Bhukti of 7th Lord.
  • Dasha / Bhukti of 2nd Lord
  • Dasha of planets with 7th Lord / aspecting 7th Lord
Transits
  • Add Longitude of Lagna Lord and 7th Lord. When Jupiter transits this point / its trine/7th from it, marriage is likely.
  • Add Longitudes of Janma Nakshatra Lord and 7th Lord. When Jupiter transits this point /its trine, marriage is likely.
  • Jupiter transits / aspects the Rashi occupied by Navamsha dispositor of Lagna Lord.
  • Lagna Lord transit of 7th House
  • Male gets married when Jupiter transits natal Venus or its dispositor or their trines.
  • Female gets married when Venus transits natal Mars or its dispositor or their trines.
  • Astakavarga system gives many transits indicating marriage.
Double Transit Method
Many modern astrologers have done research, notably Sri. KN Rao, who have formulated a theory that marriage can be predicted using the transit of two important planets namely, Saturn and Jupiter, supplemented by transits of Mars and Moon to narrow the window of marriage. We all know that nothing good in life can take place without the blessings of Jupiter and Saturn and marriage is one such event. The conditions postulated are as follows:
  • Transit Saturn should aspect Lagna Lord and / or 7th House
  • Transit Jupiter should aspect 7th Lord and / or Lagna
  • Saturn and Jupiter can reverse their role.
  • Mars and Moon meeting above conditions will narrow the timing to month / days.
  • Maximum conditions must be fulfilled.
Note
Please note that the conditions specified above may occur many times in an individual’s life but after ascertaining his classification for marriage, consider the nearest to that age.I have used this method and am confidant to state that it gives fairly accurate results, while I have come across people who are not convinced about this method. I do not wish to get into any dialogue on this issue and leave the choice to the readers.Remember that any transit prediction arrived at has to be corroborated by Dasha & Bhukti running at that time. If they are at variance, then Dasha & Bhukti prediction will prevail.
Love Marriage
This is a question which crops up time and again. Look for intense connection of 5th Lord, 7th Lord & 9th Lord either by conjunction or aspects. This condition has to be met even though many other combinations have been postulated. Rahu’s involvement with Lagna or 7th House indicates inter caste marriage.
Conclusion
Over a period of time, I have done extensive study of many horoscopes and have arrived at the points enumerated in this article. Inputs from classics and reference books by learned astrologers have also helped me immensely. I have been fortunate to have had a meaningful dialogue with many renowned astrologers on this subject and that has also given me several inputs. The point discussed here are no means exhaustive and I would urge the students to do more research and the following books may be used as reference.
