Shiva / Agni Vasa

24 Jul
I am not much into Mahurtha since I firmly believe that 100% correct Mahurtha is impossible and always there has to be a compromise. I have been approached by some Mahurtha enthusiasts that I should explain the methodology of knowing Shiva and Agni Vasa. The details are as follows.

                                                      Shiva Vasa
First Method

See the Table below for quick reference.

Tithis                      Shiva’s Place                                      Result
1, 8 & 15                   In Cemetery                                          Death
2, 9 & 30                 With Gowri                                             Happiness & Wealth
3 & 10                       In assembly                                            Grief
4 & 11                       At work / play                                       Difficulty
5 & 12                      At Kailash                                                Happiness
6 & 13                   Mounted on Vrishabha (Nandi)       Success
7 & 14                   At Dinner / Meditation                        Trouble (Peeda)

Note: During the month of Shravana, for routine Pooja, these may be ignored

Second Method.

How to calculate Shiva Vasa for Rudrabhisheka

Step 1
Start from Shukla Paksha and determine the number of Thithis elapsed.
Step 2
Multiply the number by 2
Step 3
Add 5 to the product
Step 4
Divide the sum by 7
Step 5
Note down the remainder
Remainder 1 – At Kailash
Remainder 2 – with Gowri
Remainder 3 – Mounted on Vrishabha (Nandi) – auspicious
Remainder 4 – In assembly
Remainder 5 – At Dinner / Meditation – auspicious
Remainder 6 – At work / play
Remainder 7 – In Cemetery

Example
Today, 23 July 2014 is Ashada Krishna Dwadhashi.
From Shukla Paksha, it 15 days + 12 days. Total is 27.
Multiply by 2. The product is 54
Add 5 and the resultant is 59
Divide by 7. The remainder is 3
Therefore Shiva is mounted on Nandi which is auspicious and suitable Mahurtha.

                                                     Agni Vasa

1. For all Havan, Homa and Yagna as part of Muhurtha calculations the Agni Vasa is checked.
2. All Auspicious Yagna, Havan, Homa are to be done only during Shukla Paksha i.e. from Amavasya to Poornima.
3. Hence the counting starts from Pratipath (First day after Amavasya).

Example
Important homa to be performed on Thursday, 31 July 2014.
Thithi on that day – Shukla Paksha Chaturthi
Total no of Days = 4
Add 1 to it = 4+1 =5
The day falls on Thursday. Hence from Sunday it is 5th day
Total the two: 5+5 = 10
Reduce 4 from the above 10-4 = 6
Divide the same by 3; 6/3 and get the reminder.
The reminder 6 divided 3 = 0.
If the reminder is 0 – Agni is in Bhoo Loka (Earth).
If the reminder is 1 or 2 – Agni resides in Patala Loka (Below Earth)

Implications:
If the Agni resides in Bhoo Loka (Earth) – Favourable
If the Agni resides in Patala Loka (Below Earth) – It is not Favourable.

Please check your calculation. Shukla Navami results in Shiva’s place ‘ With Gowri’ which gives happiness. You can go ahead.

DO we calculate all these for Havan after mantra Jaap. But if Jaap ends in Krishan paksha, so do one has to wait for 15 day to perform Havan

Firstly it is preferable to conduct all Havan / Homa during Shukla Paksha.
Therefore you can time your Mantra Jaap to coincide with Shukla Paksha.

For any Havan / Homa which is part of rites for the departed soul, it can be done without
checking the days / Tithi to coincide with 11/13 day functions.

Sir, But in Drikpanchang the Shiva Vasa is showing as with Gowri on Krishna Pratipada, whereas in your calculation it is not favourable as the Pratipada is showing Cemetry. Please guide can we rely on Drikpanchang for that particular location instead of above calculations? Thanks a lot for this topic.

You are unnecessarily dragging this issue from 2014/15. You are not interestred in performinhg Homa but you want to stay relevant.
Look if Drik Panchanga sayas so, so be it,,…follow it and I will not entertain any more questions on this .

Sir, does it mean that performing shiva puja on the day of purnima i.e. shukla 15th may cause death to devotee? If not so please, kindly let me know the actual calculation.

      Jyothishi July 15, 2016 at 10:39 #

In Shukla Paksha it is 15 days.
      Multiply by 2 – 15X2=30
      Add 5 to it – 30+5=35
      Divide this by 7 – 7)35(5
      35
      ____
Remainder is 0 (Zero) or 7
For Remainder 7 -Shiva’s place is Cemetery
      Effect – Death

Death does not mean literal death.
It suggests since Shiva is in Cemetery, he may not grant your wishes.
      The effort will be futile.

      Hope this clarifies your doubt.

For convenience it is said 7 to continue reading from 1 to 7.
Yes, every body knows is is ‘Zero’, if you want to call it Zero, go ahead.
      You are wasting time.

Sir, Do shiv Vasa is considered by udya tithi or the tithi prevailing time (only tithi from as it starts & ending time) irrespective of udya or day conclusion.

This method for agnivasa produces different results than undisclosed method at DrikPanchang site. Which method is correct? DrikPanchang also calculates akasha agnivasa.

What I have given is South Indian Method and it significantly differs from North Indian Method (Purnimantha System)
Ask Drik Panchanga about Akash Agnivasa and he may enlighten you about its use.

Thank you for the answer, but not really. I digged into it. Just in case of the remainder 1 considered “Akashi” Agnivasa – everything else seem to produce same results as on Drik Panchang. And North uses both amanta and purnimanta, that does not apply here. What applies is that agnihotra is valid only during Shukla Paksha, this is why the amavasya – purnima period is accounted only, there is no agnivasa for krsna paksha. Also, there are elaborate limitations for homa/havan/yagya given in Muhurta Chintamani (found in in astrology shop in London).

Well, you may presume what ever you want to suit you. If it is simple why Drik Panchanga has not clarified!!

These things are not simple. Muhurta Chintamani contains an account of many limitations for agnivasa.

Sir, Thanks much for a detailed explanation of the calculation. According to the Shiva Vasa principle, Krishna Chaturdasi (14th tithi), which is Masa Shivaratri as well as Maha Shivaratri (in Magha), is not ideal for Rudrabhishekam. Traditionally, Shivaratri days are considered ideal for Rudrabhishekam. Would you be able throw a bit more light, philosophically or otherwise, on this anomaly and applicability of this rule? Regards.

This is a most contentious subject which is influenced by regional , cultural and religious interpretations.
I would not like to get into any controversy and therefore will follow what is given in the classical books only.
