Tarabala, Chandrabala & Panchaka

Tarabala, Chandrabala & Panchaka

Various factors are checked before we decide on a Mahurtha. Tarabala and Chandrabala are two important components along with Panchanga Shuddhi which are to be checked before fixing any Mahurtha. The following stanza explains that above components have to be made good by worshiping Lord Narayana before we embark on any new venture.

तदेव लग्नं सुदिनं तदेव ताराबलं चंद्रबलं तदेव।
विद्या बलं दैवबलं तदेव लक्ष्मीपतेः तेंघ्रिऽयुगं स्मरामि॥

Tarabala

Tarabala is the strength provided by stars to your Janma Nakshatra / Birth star. Moon’s daily star / Nakshatra position needs to be favourable for casting any Mahurtha. Daily motion of moon from your Janma Nakshatra decides this strength. As moon transits into different stars it becomes favourable or unfavourable to your birth star. 27 Nakshatras are divided into three sets of 9 Nakshatras. Each part / set is called Paryaya /Navakas. To calculate Tarabala one must calculate position of daily Nakshatra from your Janma Nakshatra (both Nakshatra inclusive). Divide that by 9. If the reminder is 2, 4, 6, 8 & 9 (or 0) then it’s good otherwise it’s bad.

How to use the Tarabala Table

  • Determine your Janma Nakshatra (Birth Star) and Nakshatra in which Moon is posited for the day.
  • Locate Janma Nakshatra from the left hand side column of the table
  • Locate daily Nakshatra from the top row of the table
  • Find where both intersect – block, Green or Yellow
  • That’s your Tarabala
  • If the color is yellow or value indicated are 1,3,5,7 then they are not good.
  • If the color is green or value indicated are 2,4,6,8, or 9 then they are very good.

Example:

  • If your Janma Nakshatra (Birth star) is Aswini and today’s star is Revati, the Tarabala is 9 (Very good). But if birth star is Revati and today’s star is Aswini, your Tarabala for today will be 2 (Very good).
  • Let’s take second example. If your star is Vaishaka and today’s Nakshatra is Chitra your Tarabala will be 8 (good). But if your star was Chitra and today’s star was Vaishaka your Tarabala will be 3 (Bad).

Tarabala Explained

Important Points

  • Tarabala is a basic step in starting an important event.
  • Casting of Mahurtha chart is very important.
  • Mahurtha is possible even during the bad Tarabala by doing suitable Dosha Pariharas
  • See the list of Pariharas down below.
  • While deciding Mahurtha in case the Tarabala happens to be bad (1,3,5 and 7) and the Tara falls in First Paryaya for Janma Tara, Second Paryaya for Vipat Tara, and Third Paryaya for Pratyak Tara and in any Paryaya for Naidhana, then it has to be discarded. No Pariharas will work.
  • If Mahurtha chart is strong and all planets are well posited, then it will counter many Doshas.

Pariharas

In cases where we do not get Tarabala for any Mahurtha, we can still proceed ahead by doing following Pariharas
  • Janma Tara Dosha – Donate vegetables like yellow Pumpkin /Leafy Vegetable,
  • Vipat Tara Dosha – Donate Jaggery
  • Pratyak Tara Dosha – Donate Salt
  • Naidhana Tara Dosha – It should be avoided but If inevitable donate Til (Sesame seed) along with gold.

Chandrabala

  • Count from your Janma Rashi to the Rashi in which the Moon is posited on the day of event.
  • If the count is 1, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11 then you are said to have Chandrabala.
  • 8th count (Astama Chandra) should be avoided.

Panchaka

  • Note the number of Thithi. Prathama is 1; Dwitiya is 2 & so on.
  • Note the number of week day. Sunday 1, Monday 2 & so on.
  • Note the number of Nakshatra of the day. Ashwini 1, Bharani 2 & so on.
  • Note the number of Mahurtha Lagna. Aries 1, Taurus 2 & so on.
  • Add all the four above.
  • Divide the total by 9
  • If the remainder is 1,2,4,6, or 8 then it indicate bad results as follows:
    • 1 (Mrithyu Panchaka) – Danger & to be avoided.
    • 2 (Agni Panchaka) – Danger from fire.
    • 4 (Raja Panchaka) – Evil /bad results.
    • 6 (Chora Panchaka) – Evil happenings.
    • 8 (Roga Panchaka) – Bad results / disease.
If the remainder is 3, 5, 7 or zero then it is good.

    Respected Sir,
Regarding Tarabala you have mentioned that-
“While deciding Mahurtha in case the Tarabala happens to be bad (1,3,5 and 7) and the Tara falls in First Paryaya for Janma Tara, Second Paryaya for Vipat Tara, and Third Paryaya for Pratyak Tara and in any Paryaya for Naidhana, then it has to be discarded. No Pariharas will work”.
According to Muhurta (Electional Astrology) by B.V Raman-
“When the day’s nakshatra falls in the first Paryaya or cycle, that is-within the first nine stars, the evil suggested above, viz. 3rd star Vipat. 5th star Pratyak. etc., holds good in full.
In the Second Paryaya or cycle, e.g. Janma Nakshatra, etc., falling from the 10th to 18th, the evil is said to be only fifty per cent. In fact the evil is centred only in the first quarter of the 3rd (Vipat), the 4th quarter of the 5th (Pratyak) and the 3rd quarter of the 7th (Naidhana) of the second cycle.
In the third cycle or Paryaya, the Janma, Vipat, etc., falling from the 19th to 27th the evil is said to be almost negligible.

There is some confusion I am having in grasping the idea of the above concept. So probably it will be a little helpful and easier to understand if we discuss this with the help of a simple example-
Suppose ‘X’ ‘s Janma Nakshatra is Purva Phalguni. Now the day’s Nakshatra is Rohini. So Rohini falls under his “VIPAT TARA(3)”.
Now ,according to the above explaination which one is correct-
1.When the day’s nakshatra falls in the first Paryaya or cycle, that is-within the first nine stars, the evil suggested i.e VIPAT TARA holds good in full.
ROHINI Nakshatra falls within the first 9 Nakshatras ( i,e starting fom Ashwini ,Bharani,Krittika,Rohini, etc ROHINI is the 4th Nakshatra and therefore very much falls in the first Paryaya or cycle.Does that mean the VIPAT TARA will hold good to the fullest extent for PURVA PHALGUNI ?
    OR
2.In the third cycle or Paryaya, the Vipat, etc., falling from the 19th to 27th the evil is said to be almost negligible.
In this case, ROHINI Nakshatra is the 21st Nakshatra from PURVA PHALGUNI.Does that mean that ROHINI Nakshatra inspite of being a VIPAT TARA for PURVA PHALGUNI Nakshatra ,will not do so much of evil since it comes to 21 if we start counting from PURVA PHALGUNI i.e it falls within the third cycle ( 19th to 27th )or Third Paryaya ?
3.Last but not the least,by keeping the perspective of the above example, if I quote from your text ,it mentions that-“While deciding Mahurtha in case the Tarabala happens to be bad (1,3,5 and 7) and the Tara falls in Second Paryaya for Vipat Tara then it has to be discarded. No Pariharas will work”.
What does that mean in this context? If you can kindly elaborate with the help of an example it will be very helpful.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Sam

      1. If we have 1.3,5 and 7 … all are bad.
      2. We can still proceed with the event by doing Pariharas.
      3. Then we have specific case where if it is Janma Tara and Janma Nakshatra falls in First Paryaya, even by doing Pariharas, it will not work and it has to be discarded.
      4. Similarly for Vipat, Pratyak and Naidhana Taras.
      5. For Naidhana Tara, any Paryaya……Pariharas will not work.
      6. Your first example is correct…..Namely the days Nakshatra is to be counted from Aswini and Paryaya is to be decided.
      7. When we say it is bad, it really is bad irrespective whether it 5%, 10%, 25%, 50% or negligible.
      8. Specially for a Mahurtha for an auspicious occasion, we don’t take chances.
      9. My suggestion is that; avoid all these bad Taras at all cost.

Thank you sir for the explanation.
I have one more query pertaining to this. Generally Bharani and Krittika Nakshatras are considered bad for all auspicious activities. Now suppose on a particular day the Tarabala is good , but it happens to be either of the 2 above Nakshatras-Bharani or Krittika; then should that Muhurta be taken for an auspicious occasion based on the good Tarabala OR should it be discarded as it is a bad Nakshatra inspite of giving a good Tarabala?

        Thanks and regards,
        Sam

        • Jyothishi March 11, 2014 at 19:36 #

Bharani is Fierce or Cruel and suitable only for evil deeds.Krittika is mixed constellation suitable only for routine events.

          My suggestion…avoid both.

Thanks sir for your genuine insight in this matter.
Lastly since this is an interactive site for astrological matters ,I thought probably I can put up my question here although it is completely different from this post.
My question is how far is the determination of SHIV VAAS important when calculating muhurta( Electional Astrology)? Can it give detrimental results if SHIV VAAS is not appropriate? How to calculate it and know its results?
    Thanks and regards,
    Sam

I am not much into Mahurtha since I firmly believe that 100% correct Mahurtha is impossible and always there has to be compromise. However I will give details of ‘ Shiva Vasa’ and Agni Vasa’ which are used in Mahurtha.

        Shiva Vasa

      Tithis-1,8,15 – In cemetery
      Result: Death
      Tithis-2,9,30 – With Gowri
      Result: Happiness and wealth
      Tithis-3,10 – In assembly
      Result:Grief
      Tithis-4,11- at work
      Result: Difficulty
      Tithis-5,12 – At Kailash
      Result:Happiness
      Tithis-6,13 – Mounted on Vrishaba
      Result:Success
      Tithis-7,14 – At Dinner
      Result: Trouble (Peeda)
Note: During the month of Sawan, normally for routine poojas, this is ignored.

        Agni Vasa

For Havan, Homam and Yagya as part of Muhurat caulclations the Agnivasa is checked.
All Auspicious Yagya, Havan, Homam are to be done only during Sukla Paksha (ie.from Amavasya to Poornima).
Hence the counting starts from Pratipada (First day after Pournima).
      Say for eg.
Ganapathi homam done on 1st September 2011 being Ganesh Chathurthi.
Total no of Days = 4 (From Pratipad to Chathurthi)
      Add 1 to it = 4+1 =5
The day falls on Thursday. Hence from Sunday compute how many days to Thursday = 5
      Total the above both 5+5 = 10
      Reduce 4 from the above 10-4 = 6
Divide the same by 3 ; 6/3 and get the reminder.
      The reminder 6 divided 3 = 0.
If the reminder is 0 or 3 then it has to be understood that Agni is in Bhoo Loka (Earth).
If the reminder happens to 1 or 2 then the Agni resides in Patala Loka (Below Earth)
Implications: While the Agni residing at Bhoo Loka (Earth) Favourable
If Agni resides in Patala Loka (Below Earth) then its not Favourable.

    Hello Sir,
On reading more about astrology certain questions are coming up regarding Muhurat selection. Suppose on a particular day Tarabala is not there but Sarva Siddhi yoga is there, will the Sarva Siddhi Yog nullify the bad results of negative Tarabala?

    Thanks and regards,
    Sam

    • Jyothishi March 18, 2014 at 23:38 #

Tarabala is supreme without which you should not fix any Mahurtha.

I born on anuradha nakshatra. Married on vipat tara moola nakshatram . We forgot to do daanam of urad dal and juggery. Its been five years of my marriage. I am facing many problems. Can i do the daanam now ir there is any other remedy? Please tell me sir.

    • Jyothishi March 18, 2015 at 10:14 #

While deciding Mahurtha in case the Tarabala happens to be bad (1,3,5 and 7) and the Tara falls in First Paryaya for Janma Tara, Second Paryaya for Vipat Tara, and Third Paryaya for Pratyak Tara and in any Paryaya for Naidhana, then it has to be discarded. No Pariharas will work.

Anuradha falls in second Paryaya for Vipat Tara and no remedy will work.

However if you want your chart to be analysed please opt for consultation.

    Respected sir,
While considering tara bala and chandra bala, for which bal we have to give more importance. For example a person who has born in pushya nakshatra , moon in mesha gives chandra bala. Ashvini nakshatra is good for most of the auspicious work but for pushya nakshatra born people it is naidana tara in the 3rd paryaaya. whether this can be considered or not?

    • Jyothishi September 19, 2016 at 11:38 #

Tara Bala is the most important factor which decide Mahurtha. We can go ahead even if there is no Chandra Bala.
We can also go ahead if Tara Bala is not there provided you do the Pariharas. Please read Pariharas and
special conditions where Pariharas do not work.

    Respected sir,
I have two doubts on muhurta:
    1. How is tithi arrived at for calculating panchaka? Is it taken as it is i.e., krishna paksha shashti as 6 or should it be counted from prathama of sukla paksha and taken as 21? Also which lunar month is to be taken?
    2. For finding muhurta for entering new house, whose compatible muhurta is to be taken – the lady’s or the husband’s or both?
I seek your valuable advice on the above.
    P.Unnikrishnan

    • Jyothishi October 28, 2016 at 11:52 #

If you read my article carefully I have not made any distinction whether it is Krishna Paksha or Shukla Paksha. In your example take it as 6th Tithi.

For entering new house, the actual owner in whose name is the title is held should be considered.

    Dear Sir,

While choosing muhurtha for c-section do we check for only mother’s or both mother’s and father’s nakshatra?

Also given that the tarabalam calculated will mean new baby will have the same nakshatra as on the day does it matter for future relationship indication? Is this even a valid way of looking at tara balam in fact?

    Regards,
    Archana.

    • Jyothishi November 4, 2016 at 16:47 #

      1. Only Mother’s Nakshatra is required.
      2. Yes, if the baby is born on that day, day’s Nakshatra will become baby’s Janma Nakshatra.
      3. Where is this relationship problem coming up? …not understood.

Mrigashira is a Maha Nakshatra and if either the boy or the girl is born in this, we need not
match the horoscope. Go ahead and marry him. Do not bother about Tarabala.

    Respected Sir,

In Nov,Dec 2017, Guru is astha till Nov 9th and Shukra is astha from Nov 30th. Can marriage be held on Dec 1st (Ashwini Nakshatra) when Shukrastha has just started?
Can Kumbha Lagna be selected for Muhurtha on Dec 1st?

Boy’s nakshatra is Moola and girl’s nakshatra is Poorvashada. Both are Dhanu rasi born.
Boy’s Lagna is Tula and girl’s is Kanya. Marriage is in Bangalore.

      Shobha,

      1. I have time and again have requested people not to discuss their personal problems under “Comments” column.
      2. To get 100% correct Mahurtha is nearly impossible.
      3. Please trust your family astrologer.
      4. He may recommend some ‘Shanthi’ to be done prior to marriage / during Naandi.
      5. Professional ethics preclude me from commenting on some others judgement.

    Hi Sir,

I want to check one thing. Please help me. I’m unable to contact any astrologer right now.
My nakshatra is Satabhisham and my beloved one (her ) nakshtra is Bharani.
Can I marry her? My family members are saying she will face difficulties due to me. Her family accepted us. Also, I want to request my family again? When is the good day as per bharani nakshtra to speak with them or do I need to speak as per my nakshtram? I’m requesting her to speak once with my family, might be my family can understand.

Please advice.. Kindly do the needful.

    Thanks in advance.

Basically my mom is much into astrology and she shown to a pandit and he said it’s not suitable for marriage. Can you please guide me, what are to be done inorder to have happy married life?
and Will this effect our marriage life so badly?

Important thing is we understand each other and even when we fight, we get back to eachother within few minutes. I really love her so much and can’t afford to lose her & at the same time, I can’t deny pandit’s saying. Can you please help me out with this issue?

    Waiting for your reply
